Metastability in Latches, Arbiters and Data-convertors

چکیده

Real-time digital systems and asynchronous computer systems have an inherent risk of occasional failures due to metastability in various components used to control data-transfers. This possibility has been known for a long time, although it is sometimes forgotten or overlooked. There is renewed interest in asynchronous computer systems because of the prospects they offer for lower power operation and improved electromagnetic compatibility compared to conventional fully synchronous systems. As a result, design approaches to minimise metastability effects need to be adopted. Recent increased understanding of non-linear dynamics and the availability of software for the accurate simulation and visualisation of dynamic behaviour enables metastability to be investigated and demonstrated much more readily. This paper provides a mainly-tutorial review of how metastability arises in various commonly-used components, illustrated with the results of simulations.

Synchronization and Arbitration in GALS

Synchronizers and arbiters are important components of any Globally Asynchronous, Locally Synchronous network. They contribute to latency, because of the synchronization time required for reliability, and to metastability delay in the arbiters. Simple models of metastability have served us well up to now, but more recently work on the characterisation of deep metastability has demonstrated effe...

Petri net models of metastable operations in latch circuits

Data communications between concurrent processes often employ shared latch circuitry of some kind, the most basic being a simple flip-flop which is written by one process and read by another, providing an inter-process assignment operation of a single bit binary variable. When the processes concerned do not operate in a synchronised fashion, metastable transients are possible inside shared latc...

Overview of modelling and analysis techniques for arbiters and related circuits

This is an attempt to give an overview of the state of affairs in the literature of the modelling and analysis techniques for arbiters and related flip-flop based circuits. Efforts are especially concentrated on the lower level modelling and analysis of simple circuits using analogue dynamic systems techniques. The phenomenon known as metastability is given particular attention, especially in c...

Metastability of CMOS Latch/Flip-Flop

This paper presents several design issues of CMOS latch/flipflops for meta-stable hardness in terms of optimal device size, aspect ratio, and configurations by using the AC small signal analysis in the frequency domain rather than the time domain. This new design approach is verified experimentally. The power supply disturbance and temperature variation effects on the metastability are measured...

FPGA Implementation of Metastability-Based True Random Number Generator

True random number generators (TRNGs) are important as a basis for computer security. Though there are some TRNGs composed of analog circuit, the use of digital circuits is desired for the application of TRNGs to logic LSIs. Some of the digital TRNGs utilize jitter in freerunning ring oscillators as a source of entropy, which consume large power. Another type of TRNG exploits the metastability ...
